A snorkeler in a light rash guard drifting over a sunlit Waikiki reef in warm, clear water

One of the most common questions we hear from first-time visitors is whether they need a wetsuit to snorkel in Waikiki. The short answer for most people is no. Hawaii's ocean is warm and inviting all year, so a swimsuit is usually all you need. That said, a rash guard or a thin wetsuit can add comfort in a few situations. Here is what to expect from the water and how to decide.

Waikiki Water Is Warm Year-Round

Waikiki sits in a tropical climate, so the ocean stays comfortable in every season. Surface water temperatures generally range from the upper 70s Fahrenheit in the cooler winter months to the low-to-mid 80s in late summer. That is bath-warm compared to most mainland beaches, and it is why the vast majority of snorkelers here get in wearing nothing more than a swimsuit.

🌢 Rough Water Temperatures by Season

  • Winter (Dec to Mar): around 76 to 78°F, still very swimmable.
  • Spring (Apr to Jun): warming into the high 70s.
  • Summer to fall (Jul to Oct): the warmest, low-to-mid 80s.
  • These are typical ranges, not guarantees, and vary a little day to day.

When a Wetsuit or Rash Guard Helps

You will not need a wetsuit for warmth in most cases, but there are a few reasons you might want a little extra coverage. If you run cold, snorkel for a long time, or plan to be in the water on a breezy winter morning, you may feel a slight chill, especially once you get out into the wind. A thin shorty wetsuit or even just a rash guard takes the edge off.

A rash guard is the simplest choice, and it does double duty:

  • Adds a touch of warmth on cooler or windy days.
  • Protects your back and shoulders from the strong Hawaiian sun.
  • Reduces the need for sunscreen on your torso, which helps the reef.
  • Guards against light scrapes and stings.

Who Might Want More Coverage

Children and anyone with a slim build can lose heat a bit faster, so a rash guard or shorty is a smart, comfortable option for them. Snorkelers who like to stay out for an hour or more sometimes prefer a light wetsuit too, since even warm water pulls heat from your body over time. For a typical 45-minute Waikiki snorkel, though, most people are perfectly happy in a swimsuit.

What Our Tours Provide

On a guided snorkel tour, the boat handles the essentials so you can keep your packing simple. Our trips include quality masks, snorkels, and fins, and flotation vests are available for anyone who wants one. If you would like a wetsuit or rash guard for comfort, it is worth asking ahead so we can point you in the right direction. Otherwise, just bring your swimsuit, a towel, and reef-safe sunscreen.

The Bottom Line

For snorkeling in Waikiki, a wetsuit is optional, not essential. The water is warm enough year-round that a swimsuit works for most people, while a rash guard is a nice add for sun protection and a little extra warmth on cooler days. Come as you are, get in the water, and enjoy the reef. The honu will not mind what you are wearing.
